“Jesus Grew Up”

“And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.” - Luke 2:40

“And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” - Luke 2:52

Are you growing up, or are you just growing old?

“You can only be young once, but you can be immature for a lifetime.” - Pastor Greg McPherson

Jesus grew. It’s actually quite a mouthful. Right next to “Jesus wept,” the phrase ”Jesus grew” expresses the profound truth of the humanity of Jesus. Theologians call it the doctrine of the Incarnation… Jesus Christ, the second member of the Godhead, taking on human flesh and entering into the story of history and redemption as the sinless Savior. Without this precious and powerful reality we would be without a sacrificial substitute and still dead in our sins before a Holy God.

Jesus not only took our sins upon his shoulders on the Cross…but throughout his lifetime, he took upon himself the limitations of our humanity. He humbled himself to take the form of a servant. And he grew. He learned. God became a kid. Staggering!

We have very little material on how Jesus Christ spent the first 30 years of his life. One scene we are given shows 12 year old Jesus in the temple, amazing the teachers with his wisdom and understanding. Which tells us something very important and powerful. Jesus didn’t waste his childhood. He applied himself to his learning and growth.

How did he know the Scriptures so well? Have you ever considered that He didn’t cheat? We might be inclined to assume he had an unfair advantage, after all, he was the Son of God, right? But he grew. He grew in wisdom. He grew intellectually, emotionally, physically. He applied his mind to His Father’s business. He was in the right place, with the right people, in the right posture, applying His mind and heart to the precepts of God, hungry for the purposes and presence of God, honoring his parents, and growing in personal awareness of his identity as the Son. And in that, we can follow His example and invest in our growth. Young or old.

How are you growing? What changes do you need to make to apply your heart, mind, soul and strength to grow in wisdom?
